barbecho.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span style="font-size: medium;">En tercer lugar,

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Retos pendientes: (1) no
saben dónde pasan el invierno las canasteras ni qué ruta utilizan para migrar;
como la supervivencia y el éxito reproductor.<o:p></o:p></span></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Montserrat; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc6c4ODygBkVCf6ZoGebnrhuk6R9tCQ57BQXxzXSd4KMOJHbdZyzmwElnDqNabAehQUrQsnkhIDAN_2rlpMziqlgAv9bhr2fr82ReRrDATvdQ7PiBdoOHT7tSZJf-h6f8PZf2jlUc8lCtwGQM7lkSCwqnuZ-yjzo1UxS4bFp1gdfoOX7Pzg1G87tDe/s700/Oryxblog1.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="394" data-original-width="700" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc6c4ODygBkVCf6ZoGebnrhuk6R9tCQ57BQXxzXSd4KMOJHbdZyzmwElnDqNabAehQUrQsnkhIDAN_2rlpMziqlgAv9bhr2fr82ReRrDATvdQ7PiBdoOHT7tSZJf-h6f8PZf2jlUc8lCtwGQM7lkSCwqnuZ-yjzo1UxS4bFp1gdfoOX7Pzg1G87tDe/w640-h360/Oryxblog1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;">Imagen: <span style="background-color: white; text-align: start;">Ákos Monoki</span></span></div><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><b>BIBLIOGRAFIA:</b></span></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span face=""noto sans", Helvetica, Roboto, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #181817; text-align: start;">Kiss Á, Végvári Z, Kubelka V, <i>et al</i>. 2023. First, they <b>directly protected the nests</b>: they surrounded them with wooden poles to prevent tractors from approaching.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">The second step was to <b>create new nesting areas</b>, working with farmers and landowners. The canasteras tend to choose farmland near rice paddies in this area, as these provide abundant prey on which to feed. To create potential nesting habitats, they asked farmers to use only part of the land for rice production, leaving the rest fallow.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">Thirdly, <b>they monitored</b> <b>predator</b> populations in the area by collaborating with local hunting associations. Local predators included crows, foxes, badgers and jackals. They used selective hunting methods, such as trapping.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">In the last step, they monitored the success of the combined conservation measures by continuously observing and collecting data on breeding behaviour, nesting success and demography.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">Over 10 years, these targeted actions <b>have succeeded in increasing nest survival from less than 11% to more than 84%</b>, and the number of breeding pairs has increased from only 13 to 56. By carefully ringing a small number of birds, they have been able to track their movements and verify that <b>the same individuals return to breed in the area year after year</b>.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">Remaining challenges: (1) they do not know where the canasteras spend the winter or which route they use to migrate; (2) they do not know how they choose their nests - to improve the adaptation of arable landscapes in favour of the birds, the specific characteristics of the vegetation and geographical features, such as distance to water and degree of disturbance, need to be known; (3) they need long-term monitoring of individual birds to be able to accurately assess factors such as survival and breeding success.</span></p></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791899179844320415.post-64441249417088381382024-03-04T15:38:00.010+01:002024-03-08T11:40:40.308+01:00Steppe Birds Move<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: medium;">Poco a poco iremos presentando en este blog grupos de investigación, proyectos e iniciativas que tengan como argumento principal el estudio de las aves esteparias y, en relación a ello, su conservación.</span></div><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">Comenzamos con <b>Steppe Birds Move</b>, un grupo de investigación portugués perteneciente al CIBIO/BIÓPOLIS/Universidad de Oporto (centro de </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #0d0d0d; white-space-collapse: preserve;">investigación dedicado al estudio de la biodiversidad y los recursos genéticos), en el que llevan a cabo </span>estudios ecológicos de aves esteparias en peligro de extinción en la península ibérica.</span></div><div style="font-size: large; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: large; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0p7sX4WR6n3x3cIF-IL4VR3w4J-GcJ_LOnFwCy19kdtF29v_k2FA13sCSfRHs9ApMTuuY1sSISX2TRvhk0DxzDHGFqF4EcvJ7MbT-9dC72iwnzfSLZZp1q1iSxeWglyDSNfrNsGqAlcZINO-ZdlsP1V5Y06HuvCETa9Wdsfgb3re6lbCcbxI2yKDY/s400/logo_steppe_birds_move.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="228" data-original-width="400" height="228" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0p7sX4WR6n3x3cIF-IL4VR3w4J-GcJ_LOnFwCy19kdtF29v_k2FA13sCSfRHs9ApMTuuY1sSISX2TRvhk0DxzDHGFqF4EcvJ7MbT-9dC72iwnzfSLZZp1q1iSxeWglyDSNfrNsGqAlcZINO-ZdlsP1V5Y06HuvCETa9Wdsfgb3re6lbCcbxI2yKDY/w400-h228/logo_steppe_birds_move.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div style="font-size: large; text-align: justify;"><br /></div></span><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">La </span><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">mayor parte de sus investigaciones combina la información de seguimiento conseguida mediante GPS de aves marcadas con datos medioambientales y climáticos de alta resolución obtenidos por teledetección. This has allowed them to draw a very good picture of the evolution experienced in the last 53 years, and how it has fluctuated over time.<br /><br />During this period there have been 15 breeding nuclei, which the authors consider, as a whole, as a single breeding colony. They have analysed the different nuclei one by one, their evolution over time, the problems that have affected them and, if necessary, the solutions adopted. The lowest number of pairs is from 1970, with 15 pairs, and the highest is from 2011 with 47. This is also stated in the Strategy for the conservation of endangered birds linked to agricultural and steppe environments in Spain.<br /><br />The European plan points out that the Great Bustard is particularly vulnerable to this problem due to its congregations in feeding areas in winter and display areas in spring. In any case, there are many published studies that have recorded collisions throughout the annual cycle and in all the countries of its distribution area. Some, such as that of Carlos A. Martin and others, report that collisions with power lines are responsible for 55% of deaths during the second year of life in sub-adult birds.<br /><br />Carlos Palacín and other researchers followed a Great Bustard population for 16 years; they marked 180 individuals tagged with radio transmitters, and found that collision with power lines was the main cause of mortality of tagged males (37.6% of all deaths), and that migratory individuals died from this cause more frequently than sedentary ones (21.3% versus 6.3%).<br /><br />There is a large body of scientific literature on this subject, but a generalised conclusion is that collisions with power lines are a serious problem that may be critical for some local and isolated populations.</span><br /></span></span></p><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791899179844320415.post-68048870039284549002024-02-23T15:27:00.053+01:002024-03-08T13:29:37.342+01:00Riesgos asociados a la captura de aves esteparias: el caso del sisón<p></p><p class="western" style="text-align: justify;">

captura.

</span>
</p>
<p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">La estructura y
</span>
</p>
<p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">Las fluctuaciones
mediterráneo.</span></p><p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><br /></span></p><p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxW_roSkTJ6prph2yZ2opE60i_p-3vgBOpTeAFqn3ZS3CVr8ojrxnZLXHz_yc4rmh5mfRaQZbBbF1jG9sXyo2ZjSoS4DOnLJ4zfRp9NVdB1RQE_wm7q9wUv_n7tkcR0N7zwGx7Vx941jxV7L5zq2oaOmUmipe5rA0kIVEdzSLqQJ7Uly-_hUbhw0yK/s1024/barbechopampa.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="768" data-original-width="1024" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxW_roSkTJ6prph2yZ2opE60i_p-3vgBOpTeAFqn3ZS3CVr8ojrxnZLXHz_yc4rmh5mfRaQZbBbF1jG9sXyo2ZjSoS4DOnLJ4zfRp9NVdB1RQE_wm7q9wUv_n7tkcR0N7zwGx7Vx941jxV7L5zq2oaOmUmipe5rA0kIVEdzSLqQJ7Uly-_hUbhw0yK/w640-h480/barbechopampa.jpeg" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;">Imagen tomada de internet (infosudoeste)</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p></p><p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;"><b>REFERENCIA:</b></span></p><p class="western" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;"><a href="Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment (2016),10.1016/j.agee.2015.10.027" target="_blank">Castro, H. <i>et al</i>.</a> 2016. <span style="text-align: left;">Trends

Another relevant factor is the high number of vehicle collisions on highways and roads.<br /><br />The authors estimate that <b>between 33 and 35 houbara bustards die each year in the Canary Islands</b> due to anthropogenic causes. Population viability models using these data and juvenile productivity values obtained over seven years <b>predicted the extinction of the species in 50 years</b>.<br /><br />By eliminating human-induced mortality, the population could recover, although the species would still require management actions to improve habitat quality and encourage reproduction. "It is essential to adopt urgent conservation measures such as the burying of the most dangerous power lines, the signalling of the remaining lines with effective night-time devices, and traffic regulation, including speed limits, to reduce anthropogenic mortality. Likewise, it is necessary to improve habitat quality and reduce human impact in the areas where houbara bustards breed, to try to favour an increase in their reproduction rate", the authors propose. </span><br /></span></span></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791899179844320415.post-32715315052374105962024-02-14T18:38:00.001+01:002024-03-14T18:43:32.575+01:00Resultados del proyecto LIFE Esteparias Andalucía<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat;">En el siguiente enlace te puedes descargar el informe final divulgativo del proyecto Life Conservación y Gestión en las Zonas

<span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span>A
<p align="justify" class="western" style="break-before: auto; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm; page-break-before: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span>Comprobaron
<p align="justify" class="western" style="break-before: auto; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm; page-break-before: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span>El
<p align="justify" class="western" style="break-before: auto; line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm; page-break-before: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Montserrat;"><span>Los

However, there are not many published studies that have analyzed these changes in depth. Xabier Cabodevilla and other researchers have done so in Navarra by evaluating the impact of irrigation on the presence patterns of different species. To do so, they had a 13-year dataset composed of the 47 most common bird species in the study area.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;">They found that the implementation of irrigation had an overall negative impact on the bird community as the occurrence rates of most species (55%) decreased and only a small fraction (11%) increased after the start of irrigation, leading to an overall reduction in species richness at the site.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;">Irrigation had the most detrimental impact on farmland birds (and especially steppe birds), but also had negative effects on forest, scrubland and other non-specialized species that occur frequently in rainfed agricultural environments.</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Montserrat; font-size: x-small;">The negative effects observed on avifauna are probably due to the loss of nesting and foraging habitats as a consequence of changes in cultivation and/or the loss of fallow land associated with irrigation. The fact that only a few species responded positively to irrigation implementation suggests that, in the long term, irrigation may lead to substantial negative changes in local bird communities, with reduced diversity and a lack of ecologically important species on cropland.</span></p></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1791899179844320415.post-39028085311622978942024-02-06T16:24:00.113+01:002024-03-08T11:43:34.645+01:00¿Conservamos un espacio solo por tener avutardas o solo por tener sisones?<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Oxygen; font-size: medium;">Las propuestas de conservación a menudo se centran en una sola

Sometimes even that species does not even that species does not actually meet the basic criteria to be considered as such be considered as such. <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article/file?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0087847&type=printable" target="_blank">Rocío Tarjuelo and other researchers</a> have addressed this issue by identifying and assessing the role of area evaluated the role of areas, where great bustards and little bustards coexist at a local scale, as conservation tools.<br /><br />They conclude that concentrating efforts on an umbrella species can be dangerous if that species does not adequately reflect the ecological requirements of the heterospecifics (bustard and little bustard in this case). Hence, a multispecific approach may be more appropriate, and the identification of coexistence areas may give insight into the spatial requirements of a given assemblage. However, when coexistence zones correspond to suboptimal habitats for species that would otherwise be segregated due to their ecologies, focusing efforts on these zones may be misleading at the local scale.<br /><br />Thus, differences in species' habitat preferences may hinder the efficiency of protected areas for multi-species conservation purposes.
