Throughout the 20th century, it has expanded its range in various regions, such as the Canary Islands (where it has been present for thousands of years in the eastern islands but has only recently spread to the more western islands, such as El Hierro), Morocco, Algeria, and Israel. Among these expansions, the colonization of the Iberian Peninsula—and by extension, Europe—during the second half of the last century stands out.
The first record of the species in the Iberian Peninsula dates back to 1877 near the city of Málaga. Since then, its distribution map has gradually developed and currently includes the provinces of Almería, Granada, Murcia, Alicante, and also reports from Málaga and Cáceres.
Several factors have been cited as contributing to the expansion of its range, such as the increase in agricultural areas and military camps that supply water to desert zones, as well as the increased aridity caused by climate change.
