Dung seeding involves distributing livestock dung, generally from sheep, in areas where the presence of the Dupont’s lark is being encouraged. This technique is based on the importance of extensive livestock farming, particularly sheep grazing, for the conservation of this steppe-dwelling bird.
The Dupont’s lark primarily feeds on arthropods, many of which are coprophagous, meaning they feed on dung.
Sheep grazing, by depositing dung on the ground, increases the availability of food for the lark. Additionally, grazing helps control shrub growth, creating a vegetation structure more favorable to the lark.
As part of the LIFE Ricotí project, it was demonstrated that dung seeding had a positive effect on the availability of arthropods, including coprophagous species. In the areas where seeding was carried out, an increase in arthropod biomass was recorded compared to control areas. Furthermore, there was an observed rise in the number of Dupont’s lark territories in the experimental zones.
Dung seeding seeks to replicate the effects of extensive sheep grazing. However, the physical presence of sheep in the field would have an additional impact by controlling the growth of herbaceous plants.
